Dr. Ulf Buermeyer, LL.M. (Columbia) ist Jurist und Publizist aus Berlin.

Seit 2016 moderiert er gemeinsam mit dem Journalisten Philip Banse die “Lage der Nation“, den größten Politik-Podcast in Deutschland. Die “Lage” erreicht mit jeder Folge rund eine halbe Million Menschen und wird monatlich rund zwei Millionen mal heruntergeladen. Daneben schreibt er regelmäßig u.a. für den Freitag, die Süddeutsche Zeitung und ZEIT online.

Von 2007 bis 2024 war Ulf Buermeyer Richter des Landes Berlin und vor allem als Strafrichter am Landgericht Berlin tätig. Zum 1. August 2024 beantragte er seine Entlassung aus dem Richterdienst, um sich voll seiner journalistischen Arbeit bei der “Lage der Nation” widmen zu können.

2015 war Ulf Buermeyer Mitgründer und erster Vorsitzender der Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte (GFF), einer gemeinnützigen Organisation, die sich für den Schutz der Menschen- und Bürgerrechte durch strategisch geführte Gerichtsverfahren einsetzt. Bis zu seinem Rückzug im Jahr 2025 blieb er Vorstandsmitglied der GFF.

Im Zuge zweier Abordnungen war Ulf Buermeyer wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter des Bundesverfassungsgerichts sowie des Verfassungsgerichtshofs des Landes Berlin. Von der Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität Frankfurt/Main wurde er mit einer Arbeit über Informationelle Selbstbestimmung und effektiven Rechtsschutz im Strafvollzug promoviert. 2013/2014 studierte er im Rahmen eines Sabbaticals im LL.M-Programm der Columbia Law School in New York City.

In seiner Freizeit radelt er gerne durch Brandenburg, reist mit dem Zug durch Europa und schreibt Apps für iPhone, iPad und Mac.

Dr. Ulf Buermeyer, LL.M. (Columbia) is a Berlin-based legal scholar and political journalist. Together with journalist Philip Banse he hosts Germany’s most successful podcast on politics, “Lage der Nation” (State of the Nation). The show reaches about 500.000 listeners per episode and is downloaded around two million times per month.

From 2007 until 2024 Ulf Buermeyer was tenured judge of the federal state of Berlin, serving mostly in criminal cases on the bench of Berlin Superior Court. Effective August 1, 2024, he resigned from his life-tenure position in order to focus on his career as a journalist at “Lage der Nation”.

2015 he co-founded Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte (Freedom Rights Society, GFF), a Berlin-based non-profit and non-governmental organization that protects human and civil rights by means of impact litigation. Ulf Buermeyer served as GFF’s president and board member until stepping back in 2025.

Ulf Buermeyer’s work as a legal scholar focuses on matters of Constitutional Law as well as Criminal Law (including Criminal Procedure & Prison Law). He served as law clerk at both the German Federal Constitutional Court as well as the Constitutional Court of the Federal State of Berlin. Ulf Buermeyer is a fellow of the Centre for Internet and Human Rights (CIHR) at Europa-Universität Viadrina (Frankfurt/Oder) und lecturer at Freie Universität Berlin’s Law Department. He obtained a doctoral degree (Dr. iur.) from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt/Main with a thesis on “Informational Self-Determination and Effective Judicial Review in Correctional Institutions”. 2013/2014 he was on leave to obtain a master’s degree (LL.M.) at Columbia Law School, New York City. 

In his spare time Ulf Buermeyer loves cycling in Brandenburg, traveling through Europe by train and writing apps for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
